2019-2020 School Year Suspended Indefinitely

March 15, 2020 - As many of you are aware, the Province of Alberta is taking aggressive measures to ensure the safety of all Albertans in the face of the current medical pandemic and the spread of COVID-19. The latest strategy outlined by Dr. Deena Hinshaw, Chief Medical Officer of Health is effective immediately; student attendance at schools is prohibited.

Teachers and other school staff will still be expected to work, either from home or at their workplace, to ensure these expectations are met and to support student learning.

Decisions are still to be made when it comes to student progression, final marks and advancement of grades. We do know that  provincial assessments, such as provincial achievement tests will be cancelled as of this time. Diploma exams essential for post-secondary acceptance will continue.

Options for programming and supports for students will be determined in the very near future. At Parkland School Division, we are committed to working with families to support them through these unprecedented times.

We will be sharing more information as it becomes available and we encourage you to check back to this website for the latest.

On Sunday March 15, 2020, the province confirmed there are 17 new cases of COVID-19. The total number of cases in Alberta has jumped to 56. Seven of the cases happened because of a single gathering in the Calgary zone.

"This underlines the fact that gatherings can accelerate the spread of the virus," Alberta's Chief Officer of Health Deena Hinshaw said.

In addition to the new cases in the province, Hinshaw confirmed that at least two of the cases identified over the last two days are non-travel related, or community spread cases.

Talking To Your Children

Listen to students/children and provide age-appropriate information. Let them know they can talk about their feelings and ask questions. Answer questions honestly but make sure that the information is suitable for their age level and more information is coming. If you don’t know the answers to their questions it’s okay to say so and together look for resources that can answer their questions. Remember students/children are often listening when you talk to others about COVID-19. It may be in these settings where students/children can become misinformed. It will be important for administrators and staff to correct this misinformation when they are made aware of it.

Personal Items

We kindly ask all parents and guardians to be patient as staff and administrators work through many unknowns during this unprecedented time. Information will be shared as decisions are made and when it becomes available. The most common question is related to personal item retrieval from schools. Those logistics need to be determined and will be shared with parents and guardians directly via email. Unless your inquiry is medical in nature, we respectfully ask that parents and guardians refrain from contacting the schools. Thank you all for your patience and understanding.

Busing

Parkland School Division's regional transportation system bus service has also been suspended indefinitely.
